“Think Outside the Chair” _ Katy Bowman
Part Two

Wholesome natural movements for daily life.

Hi All,

My questions to you last month were a) what we are most configured to; and b) which of those do you package into your daily life.

Let’s consider first and foremost that we are bipeds. Our feet are extremely important to us because they communicate directly with our vestibular (inner ear) system so we can be upright and balanced. Our superpower is the ability to walk long distances for the purpose of survival.

When I think about natural movements, and how to restore and reintroduce them into daily life, the first thing that comes to mind is childhood freedom, play and exploration. Nature offers all those things, away from the confinements of modern-day life. Granted, modern-day life has its many comforts and conveniences but without ‘balance’ it comes at a great cost.

Here are some examples of natural wholesome movements:
Walking, Squatting, Lunging, Reaching, Throwing, Pushing, Pulling, Jumping, Climbing, Crawling, Floor sitting postures and Balancing.

The human body is only moderately configured to hanging (brachiating), so take care there!

Who’s in charge? Your feet!

Yours in Health & Movement,

Fem.
